Monte Carlo (Micranthemum tweediei) – Lush Carpeting Plant for Aquascaping
Monte Carlo is one of the most popular and versatile carpeting plants in the aquascaping world. With its small, round, bright green leaves, it forms a dense, low-growing carpet that looks stunning in nature-style, Iwagumi, and shrimp tanks.
While it can survive in low-tech setups, Monte Carlo grows best with good LED lighting and CO₂ supplementation, which helps it stay compact and spread quickly across the substrate.
Lighting Requirements: 6–8 hours/day (moderate to high light)
CO₂ Requirements: Recommended for compact growth, but not essential
Care Level: Medium (easier than HC Cuba)
Fertiliser Needs: Benefits from root tabs or liquid fertiliser
Growth Type: Spreading carpet plant
Placement: Foreground
Potential Issues: Without strong light or CO₂, it may grow upward instead of carpeting
Why Choose Monte Carlo?
-
Perfect for Aquascaping: Creates a dense, vibrant green carpet
-
Compact Growth: Stays low and tidy with CO₂ and trimming
-
Beginner-Friendly (with care): Easier than HC Cuba, but still scape-worthy
-
Shrimp & Fry Safe: Offers shelter and grazing areas
-
Versatile Use: Great in nano tanks or as a foreground accent in larger layouts
Care Tips:
-
Plant in small clumps spaced a few cm apart to encourage fast spreading
-
Use good LED lighting to maintain its low, creeping growth habit
-
Add CO₂ and nutrients for best coverage and colour
-
Trim regularly to prevent vertical growth and encourage horizontal spreading
