Anubias nana is a compact, slow-growing freshwater aquarium plant with firm green leaves. It is especially useful in low-tech aquariums, nano aquascapes and shaded areas where many faster-growing plants struggle.
- Lighting: Low to moderate; the existing recommendation is approximately 4–6 hours daily, depending on light intensity.
- CO₂: Not required.
- Care: Easy; slow growth means little trimming is needed.
- Placement: Foreground or midground, attached to rocks, wood or other aquarium décor.
- Planting: Keep the rhizome above the substrate. Roots may grow into the substrate, but burying the rhizome can lead to rot.
- Potential issues: Slow-growing leaves may develop algae under excessive lighting or when the aquarium is out of balance.
Anubias nana works well in freshwater community tanks and planted shrimp aquariums. Its sturdy leaves also make it a useful option in some cichlid setups, although no live plant is guaranteed to withstand digging or grazing fish.
