he Large Crested Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus ‘Windelov’ or similar) is one of the best beginner-friendly aquarium plants on the market — slow-growing, striking, and incredibly hardy. With its finely divided, lacy leaf tips, this crested variety adds elegant texture to any aquascape.
Perfect for tanks ranging from bettas to African cichlids, this plant thrives in a wide range of conditions and requires no special lighting, CO₂, or substrate. In fact, Java Ferns should never be buried, as their rhizomes can rot if planted too deep. Instead, simply tie or wedge them onto driftwood or rock and let them do their thing.
They grow up to 30cm tall, making them ideal as a midground or feature plant. Whether you’re a first-time fishkeeper or a seasoned aquascaper, this is a true set-and-forget plant.
